  • y’know, take Alan Partridge and slow him down – make him sound a little wasted – and he sounds like Riff Raff from the Rocky Horror Picture show…

  • GB is the island. The UK includes N. Ireland & other bits.

It’s called diphthong raising (or Canadian raising). Took a linguistics class in Uni and haven’t forgotten that. We shorten the sound of diphthongs (“ow” and “oi” sounds) if they’re followed by a voiceless consonant (like a t, meaning the vocal chords don’t vibrate. The difference between a t and d is that your vocal chords vibrate on a d)

A Canadian pronounces house and houses differently because of the unvoiced s in house and the voiced s in houses (sounds like a z). An American doesn’t pronounce the vowels any differently. Because they’re not conditioned to it, they can’t say it and; therefore, can’t hear it so they think it’s an “oo”

    how’s that for geeky?

  • here, I’ll cut and paste, since I accidentally put this under #132 comments.

man, your age is showing (David Gahan!). On the bright side, you’re probably a whiz at 80s trivia…

    And in chirps Shelley:

“Ok, I’ve got another voice that I’m completely in love with. I swear if you brought Joy and Imran on at the same time, I could completely die happy.

While I’m not much of a gaming fan (no hand/eye co-ordination to handle the silly things) I do enjoy listening to you boys talk about stuff that I remember from my youth (God, I’m old)

I will admit, I had no idea about the lead vocalist from Depeche Mode either. Of course, I really don’t like the band……

There’s something about the way that Imran talks that reminds me of Monty Python – not the accent, just the phrasing and comments. I absolutely love it.

I laughed at the microwave cookery line.

And yes, Steve Coogan and Courtney Love were an item back in 2005. Briefly, very briefly.

I think I’m almost caught up – one episode left and just in time for tomorrows upload!”
