33418, a Night of Firsts
The first omen that I had was the traffic in Toronto on a Friday. Knowing I had to be in Burlington at Club 54 for an 8:00pm show, I thought I’d better give myself a load of time to get out there. Just after 6:00pm I was on the westbound QEW and was faced with…nothing. No traffic to speak of. The eastbound QEW was mobbed so that it appeared that everyone was fleeing the suburbs where I was headed. So this made me wonder just what had happened that would force everyone to leave. I guess that everyone heard I was performing out there.
Got there for the first Friday show since they stopped doing Thursday nights at Club 54. One night moved to two nights, Friday and Saturday, at 8:00pm before the big weekend dance party nonsense. Got there and saw that old pal Dave Martin was on the show, so that would be good. By 8:00pm there was no one there. 8:30pm and we had 18 people. So, show goes on.
For a crowd that small they were attentive, reactive, and pretty cool to deal with. 33 minutes later I was off. Glad that it happened since, as nice as Burlington is, it would have been crappy to go out there for nothing. Thanks again 54.
